
Communication Unit members maintain an extensive system of Amateur Radio repeaters under the club call sign of W6SAR. All repeaters are equipped with emergency backup power and will continue to operate without commercial power. These repeaters are used during Search & Rescue callouts for logistics and en-route communications. A large percentage of volunteers in the Communications Unit as well as all other SAR units are licensed Amateur Radio operators. The repeaters are open to the Amateur Radio community in Northern California and are available for use during emergencies. The communications truck is equipped with a Kenwood TM-742A tri-band radio allowing communications on 6-meters, 2-meters and the 222mhz Amateur bands. For communications in the UHF band we use a Motorola XTL-1500. There is also an Icom IC-M802 HF tranceiver that is capable of operation from 3 through 30 mhz.
